Caspian Stonechat is unfortunately still treated as Siberian Stonechat of the race S.m. variegatus/hemprichii and breeds around the Caspian Sea in eastern Europe. This is the fourth record of this form in the UK, and hopefully one day will be split one way or another.
the 'Northern Wheatear' like rump and white extending down the tail separate this form from others across eastern Europe and Asia. Photos from others present showed the jet black underwing coverts that is probably the strongest feature if 'rubicola' was an option.
this was screen-shot off my phone freezing the one of two videos I had taken of the bird. It does show the jet black wing coverts.
1s male Caspian Stonechat at Titchfield Haven NNR.
My camera memory card had annoyingly been left at home so phone-scoped pictures is all I could manage.
