Splash Point & Newhaven Harbour 14/3/20

With a hint of east forecast in the predominantly southerly wind, I got down Splash Point nice and early to hopefully glimpse some spring migration. Thankfully, for once I got the predictions right and enjoyed a steady passage of wildfowl and divers. By 10am, the passage had slowed dramatically and I went hunting for grounded migrants.

Splash Point 06.30-10.15:

Shelduck - 24
Common Scoter - 65
Brent Geese - 755
Red-throated Diver - 38
Pintail - 10
Teal - 7
Gadwall - 3
Curlew - 2
Sandwich Tern - 8
Red-breasted Merganser - 1
Shoveler - 19
Wigeon - 7
Gannet - 9
Mediterranean Gull - 7
Razorbill - 1

Despite a lengthy walk from Splash Point, up and over Seaford Head to the Lower Cuckmere, and back via Chyngton Farm, I failed to find any quality. A single Firecrest, 6 Goldcrests and a Chiffchaff were the only obvious migrants.

A brief stop at the parents produced the regular female Blackcap on the feeders. The Great Northern Diver at Newhaven Harbour also showed brilliantly at high tide.
